# About Finnish eIDs (FTN)

Signicat supports the Finnish BankIDs and Mobiilivarmenne within the framework of the Finnish Trust Network (FTN). FTN is established by the Finnish government and is supervised by Traficom. The aim of FTN is to provide strong authentication services for citizens to access public and private services in Finland.

# Identity providers in FTN

FTN includes the following identity providers:

  • Handelsbanken
  • Nordea
  • OP Bank Group
  • Danske Bank
  • Aktia
  • Säästöpankki (Savings Bank)
  • POP Bank
  • Bank of Åland
  • S-Bank
  • OmaSP
  • Mobiilivarmenne

All these are banks, except Mobiilivarmenne. Mobiilivarmenne is a PKI-based authentication method run by the Finnish mobile operators, DNA, Elisa and Telia. Mobiilivarmenne is based on certificates that are located on the users’ SIM cards.

Through one agreement with Signicat, you will get access to all these identity providers in a single point of integration. You do not need any agreements nor specific technical integration towards the banks.

# Use cases

Our FTN integration service may be used for:

  • Identity proofing: To become a customer of a bank, you have to register as a user for the first time. To prove your identity, you can choose to use FTN as an ID method.

  • Authentication: As a registered customer with a bank, you will be able to apply for a loan. To be able to log in to your bank, you have to authenticate to prove your identity. FTN can be used for authentication, the same way it can be used for registering as a new customer.

  • Signing: You can use FTN to electronically sign one or more documents, for example a loan application in a bank.

You may also use our FTN integration for issuing a new eID at the same or a lower assurance level. Special pricing applies for the latter. Contact us at support@signicat.com if you have such needs for your service.

The same service is used for these use cases. However, the ID method can be configured with different flows. For example, onboarding a new customer is a one-time occurrence, while authentication is a repetitive action for the customer. You may set up a simpler user flow for recurring authentications. The level of assurance that is required depends on the services you offer.

For technical integration details:

# How does it work?

The default setup is that all banks and Mobiilivarmenne are shown to the end-user as login options.

FTN login

When the end-user has selected the ID method to use from the menu displayed by Signicat, the user is redirected to the selected identity provider's user interface.

# Identification principles for FTN

Signicat is a licensed broker in the Finnish Trust Network (FTN) and follows their identification principles (opens new window) for “strong electronic identification”. The identification principles are available for the end-users from Signicat's FTN login portal as part of the consent message. By selecting one of the login options, the end-user accepts that Signicat as a broker forwards their personal data from the bank or mobile certificate provider to the service provider.

Security and privacy policies for end-users

The aim of the Identification principles (opens new window) page is to inform the end-users that Signicat handles their personal data securely and in compliance with FTN's identification principles.

# Level of Assurance

All ID methods supported by Signicat for FTN are “strong electronic identification” according to Finnish regulations, meaning they are Finnish eID level 2, which corresponds to eIDAS' (opens new window) "substantial" Level of Assurance.

If you need more information about the level of assurance, please contact TRAFICOM.
