Sample documents

Signicat can provide physical sample documents (ID cards or passports) issued by the fictional country of Utopia. These ID documents are designed exclusively for testing on pre-production/sandbox environments and demonstration purposes.

The contents on the Visual Inspection Zone (VIZ) and NFC chip of each sample document can be customised with fictional or real personal data and a custom or stock face image. When testing facial verification (biometric likeness and liveness via the iProov add-on), using your own face image allows you to test the complete "happy flow" where face matching succeeds.

Scope of use

Sample documents are valid only in sandbox and pre-production environments and are never accepted in production. They must be used in combination with ReadID and supported biometric verification services such as iProov.

Supported test flows​

Utopian sample documents allow you to test and demonstrate business logic, error handling and technical integrations without using real ID documents. The following five different test flows are supported:

  • Happy: All data is correctly encoded and signed with our Utopian Country Signing Certificate. Passive authentication succeeds in pre-production environments. It fails on production environments because Utopia is not an existing country.
  • UnknownCS: The document is signed with an unknown certificate, causing the Country Signing (CS) certificate check to fail, resulting in passive authentication failure.
  • DG2Forgery: The face image in the NFC chip (conveyed by Data Group 2 (DG2)) is intentionally replaced by a stock face image, to differ from the printed one on the VIZ. This triggers a passive authentication failure due to a hash mismatch in Data Group 2.
  • CloningFail: Simulates a cloned ID document where Active Authentication fails due to an invalid signature.
  • NoCloning: Data Groups 14 and 15 (DG14/DG15) are omitted from the chip, meaning clone detection is not supported and fails the clone detection check.

How to order​

Follow these steps to order sample documents:

  1. Request a quote: Contact your Signicat account manager with your requirements to receive pricing details.
  2. Confirm quote: Review and confirm the quote.
  3. Complete the configuration: Fill in one .yml template file per requested document.
  4. Provide face images: Provide one .jpg face image (300×400 pixels) per document.
  5. Provide delivery address: Provide the physical shipping address for dispatching the sample documents.
  6. Commit details: Send the completed YAML file(s), face image(s) and shipping details to your Signicat account manager or point of contact.

You can customise the information stored in the NFC chip and printed on the document by filling in a configuration YAML file for each ID document you order.

Privacy and handling precautions​

Because sample documents may contain personal data and face images, please keep the following in mind:

  • Data deletion: Any personal information and face images submitted to Signicat are permanently deleted once the sample document has been manufactured.
  • Fictional numbers only: Do not use real national identity numbers (such as the Dutch BSN, Norwegian fødselsnummer etc.) or real ID document numbers in the personalNumber or documentNumber fields.
  • Image requirements: Ensure face images are in JPEG format (.jpg) with a resolution of 300×400 pixels. For facial matching (e.g. iProov), use a clear, passport-style face image with neutral lighting and framing.
  • Certificate trust: Utopia sample documents are signed with a dedicated Utopian Country Signing Certificate. This certificate is only trusted in pre-production test environments.
  • Safe storage: Keep sample documents secure. Although they are not legally valid ID documents, they may contain personal likenesses or data. Never attempt to use sample documents for real-world identity verification (e.g. opening bank accounts).
