Battery level
The battery level risk indicator allows you to identify and manage MobileID devices with unusual battery level patterns across transactions.
By reviewing these patterns, you can detect potentially suspicious device activity and take action to help prevent fraud.
How it works
Device battery levels normally change as devices are used and charged. Unusual patterns across transactions may indicate suspicious activity.
We compare each device's battery level variation with the variation across your account. A lower variation relative to the account produces a higher risk score, indicating a more suspicious battery level pattern.
If a device repeatedly reports the same or very similar battery level across transactions, it could indicate a continuously powered device, potentially used for automated activity.
Low variation can also occur during legitimate use, so you should always review the device's transactions and other risk properties before taking action.
Prerequisites
The battery level risk indicator is an add-on for MobileID. This means that you need to Get access before you can use it.
Once you have access, you also need to enable collection of the batteryLevel risk attribute before you can start risk evaluations.
The batteryLevel risk attribute is Optionally collected in the MobileID SDKs. This means that it is not collected by default, and requires action from you to enable it. To do this:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Features > Risk data.
- Under Optionally collected, select the Battery level checkbox.
- Click the Save button.
How to configure it
You can configure the minimum number of transactions needed to evaluate a device and the minimum risk score threshold. To do this:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Click the Configure button in the top right corner.
- In the dialogue, set Minimal number of transactions per device to at least
2. A device must have this number of transactions before it can be evaluated. - Set Minimum risk score to a value from
1to99. This is the minimum risk score that a device must have in order to be flagged as suspicious. - Click the Save button.
How to use it
You can monitor and manage suspicious devices directly from the Signicat Dashboard. This allows you to mitigate risks quickly and protect your end-users.
To learn more about the actions that you can take, see the sections below:
Investigate devices
You can review flagged devices and the MobileID users associated with them. To do this:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, review the device IDs, risk scores and transaction counts from the last six months.
- To learn more about a flagged device, click the Check details button next to it. Here, you can investigate the flagged device and other devices associated with the same MobileID user.
If the Signicat Dashboard displays No suspicious activity found, then this means that no suspicious battery level patterns have been detected using the current settings.
Check that:
- You have enabled collection of the
batteryLevelrisk attribute. - You have configured the detection settings suitably.
Device details
Under the Details section on the page, you can review key information about the flagged device and its derived battery level risk properties.
User properties
Under the User section, you can review the MobileID user associated with the flagged device, and any other MobileID devices that are associated with the same user which may require investigation.
Lock devices
You can lock active MobileID devices to prevent them from being used for authentication or signing.
There are two lock flows that you can carry out:
- Lock a single device.
- Lock all devices for a given user.
To do this:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, click the Check details button next to a suspicious device.
- Follow the steps in the table below according to the lock flow that you want to carry out:
Action Description Lock a single device Click the Lock device button.
Note: To lock an additional device, under User, click the Lock button beside the device ID that you want to lock.Lock all devices for a user Under User, click the Lock all devices for this user button. - To confirm, click the confirmation button in the dialogue box.
Unlock devices
You can unlock locked MobileID devices to allow them to be used for authentication or signing again.
You can only unlock a single device at a time. To do this:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, click the Check details button next to the device.
- Click the Unlock device button.
Unlock additional devices
To unlock an additional device, under User, click the Unlock button beside the device ID that you want to unlock.
Block device hash
You can add a device hash to a blocklist to prevent any new MobileID devices from being created on that physical device in the future.
This operation also locks all active MobileID devices that are associated with the device hash, which prevents them from being used for authentication or signing.
To block a device hash:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, click the Check details button next to a suspicious device.
- Click the Block device hash button.
- To confirm, click the Yes, block device hash button.
Unblock device hash
You can unblock a previously blocked device hash to allow new MobileID devices to be created on that physical device again.
When you block a device hash, all associated devices are automatically locked.
Unblocking the device hash does not automatically unlock these devices. You must manually unlock any devices that you wish to use again.
To unblock a device hash:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, click the Check details button next to a device with the blocked hash.
- Click the Unblock device hash button.
- To confirm, click the Yes, unblock device hash button.
Lock a user
You can lock the user associated with a flagged device. A locked user cannot perform operations.
To lock a user:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, click the Check details button next to a device associated with the user.
- Under User, click the Lock user button.
- To confirm, click the Yes, lock user button.
Unlock a user
You can unlock a locked user so they can perform operations again.
To unlock a user:
- Go to Signicat Dashboard > Products > MobileID > Risk indicators > Battery level.
- Under the Flagged devices section, click the Check details button next to a device associated with the user.
- Under User, click the Unlock user button.
Exclude devices from risk evaluations
You can exclude a device from risk evaluations by adding its device hash to the excluded devices list.
To learn how to do this, see the Excluded devices page.
API integration
You can also integrate with the device hash risk indicator programmatically, using our REST APIs instead of the Signicat Dashboard.
To learn more, see the following resources in our API reference documentation:
- The MobileID Risk indicators configuration resource in our Admin API.
- The MobileID Statistics resource in our Admin API.
Get access
The battery level risk indicator is an add-on for MobileID. This means that you need to get access before you can use it, which you can do by contacting our sales team.
To do this, click the Get access button on the Battery level page in the Signicat Dashboard.
